Understanding microfarads and millifarads
A microfarad (µF) is 10⁻⁶ of the base unit (farad) and a millifarad (mF) is 10⁻³. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from µF to mF means dividing by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the left.
Microfarads are the marked unit for electrolytic and film capacitors: supply decoupling, motor-run caps, audio coupling. Below 1 µF the industry switches again to nanofarads and picofarads, so µF sits in the middle of a three-unit convention rather than at the edge of one.

Common µF to mF mistake
Three-digit capacitor codes are picofarads, not microfarads: '104' means 100000 pF = 0.1 µF. Reading it as 104 µF is a million-fold error and a common cause of a rebuilt supply that oscillates.
