Understanding millimeters and micrometers
A millimeter (mm) is 10⁻³ of the base unit (meter) and a micrometer (µm) is 10⁻⁶. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from mm to µm means multiplying by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the right.
Millimeters are the working unit of drawings, calipers and CAD: sheet thickness, hole spacing, and anything a machinist reads off a print. Once a dimension carries a tolerance tighter than about 0.05 mm the decimals start getting miscounted, which is the point where drawings switch to micrometers instead.
This calculator shifts the decimal exponent rather than multiplying in binary floating point, so 2.5 mm returns exactly 2,500 µm — not a value with a trailing rounding error.
