Understanding millivolts and microvolts

A millivolt (mV) is 10⁻³ of the base unit (volt) and a microvolt (µV) is 10⁻⁶. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from mV to µV means multiplying by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the right.

Millivolts cover thermocouple output, shunt-resistor drops, logic offsets and battery sag. A type-K thermocouple gives about 41 µV per °C, so a 100 °C span reads roughly 4 mV — small enough that lead resistance and connector junctions start to matter.

This calculator shifts the decimal exponent rather than multiplying in binary floating point, so 0.75 mV returns exactly 750 µV — not a value with a trailing rounding error.

Common mV to µV mistake
