Understanding microvolts and millivolts
A microvolt (µV) is 10⁻⁶ of the base unit (volt) and a millivolt (mV) is 10⁻³. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from µV to mV means dividing by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the left.
Microvolts are where biopotentials and instrumentation noise live: EEG signals run 10–100 µV, ECG a few hundred, and a good instrumentation amplifier contributes only a few µV of input-referred noise. At this scale thermoelectric EMF at a solder joint is a real error source, not a rounding detail.
This calculator shifts the decimal exponent rather than multiplying in binary floating point, so 750 µV returns exactly 0.75 mV — not a value with a trailing rounding error.
Common µV to mV mistake
Noise specs are often quoted as µV/√Hz (spectral density), not µV. Multiplying a density figure by 1000 to reach mV without first integrating over the measurement bandwidth produces a number that means nothing.
