Understanding milliliters and microliters
A milliliter (mL) is 10⁻³ of the base unit (liter) and a microliter (µL) is 10⁻⁶. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from mL to µL means multiplying by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the right.
Milliliters are the unit of syringes, graduated cylinders, buffer prep and dosing. Below about 0.1 mL a graduated cylinder stops being honest — meniscus reading and wall wetting dominate — which is where the workflow moves to positive-displacement pipettes.
