Understanding microliters and milliliters
A microliter (µL) is 10⁻⁶ of the base unit (liter) and a milliliter (mL) is 10⁻³. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from µL to mL means dividing by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the left.
Microliters are the everyday unit of the wet lab: PCR reactions run 10–50 µL, HPLC injections 1–100 µL, and micropipettes are specified per volume band. A P20 pipette is far less accurate at 1 µL than at 15 µL, so the unit you write usually implies the instrument you must use.
