Understanding millifarads and microfarads
A millifarad (mF) is 10⁻³ of the base unit (farad) and a microfarad (µF) is 10⁻⁶. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from mF to µF means multiplying by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the right.
Millifarads are almost never printed on a part. Bulk electrolytics and supercapacitors that would be 4.7 mF are marked 4700 µF instead, so mF mostly shows up in simulation netlists, textbook problems and spreadsheets — which is precisely why it needs converting.
This calculator shifts the decimal exponent rather than multiplying in binary floating point, so 0.1 mF returns exactly 100 µF — not a value with a trailing rounding error.
Common mF to µF mistake
Three-digit capacitor codes are picofarads, not microfarads: '104' means 100000 pF = 0.1 µF. Reading it as 104 µF is a million-fold error and a common cause of a rebuilt supply that oscillates.
