Real-World Context
1 µg is roughly the weight of a dust particle
Step-by-Step
1. Start with 500 µg. 2. Since 1 micro-unit = 1/1,000th of a milli-unit, divide by 1,000. 3. 500 ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 mg.

microgram to milligram formula

Milli is 10^-3 and micro is 10^-6. They are three powers of ten apart, so every µg to mg conversion uses the exact factor 1,000.

mg = µg ÷ 1,000
500 µg ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 mg

Understanding micrograms and milligrams

A microgram (µg) is 10⁻⁶ of the base unit (gram) and a milligram (mg) is 10⁻³. They sit three powers of ten apart, so going from µg to mg means dividing by exactly 1,000 — move the decimal point three places to the left.

Micrograms appear in trace analysis, vitamin and hormone dosing, and environmental limits. The distinction is clinically serious: levothyroxine and digoxin are dosed in µg, and a µg/mg slip is a thousand-fold overdose rather than a typo.

This calculator shifts the decimal exponent rather than multiplying in binary floating point, so 500 µg returns exactly 0.5 mg — not a value with a trailing rounding error.

Common µg to mg mistake

Older labels and some regions still write 'mcg' for microgram to avoid handwritten µ being read as m. Treat mcg and µg as identical, and never abbreviate microgram as 'ug' on anything clinical.

When to use µg vs mg

micrograms and milligrams are used for lab samples, supplement labels, chemistry prep, and medication-strength notation. Use the larger milli unit when the number becomes easier to scan, and the smaller micro unit when you need finer detail.
